Ils sont pourtant bien r\u00e9els, document\u00e9s scientifiquement depuis 1989, et constituent aujourd&rsquo;hui l&rsquo;un des champs les plus actifs de la recherche atmosph\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n<p>Regroup\u00e9s sous le terme de <strong>TLE<\/strong> (<em>Transient Luminous Events<\/em>, ou ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes lumineux transitoires), ils se d\u00e9clenchent au-dessus des syst\u00e8mes orageux les plus \u00e9lectriquement actifs \u2014 ceux-l\u00e0 m\u00eames que nous suivons en temps r\u00e9el sur nos cartes de foudre.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>O\u00f9 se produisent-ils ?<\/h2>\n<p>La distinction est essentielle : <strong>les TLE ne sont pas des \u00e9clairs ordinaires<\/strong>. Ils ne se produisent ni dans le nuage, ni entre le nuage et le sol, mais <strong>au-dessus du cumulonimbus<\/strong>, dans des couches atmosph\u00e9riques extr\u00eamement Certains ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes lumineux transitoires traversent plusieurs \u00e9tages : les farfadets peuvent s\u2019\u00e9tendre sur une grande partie de la m\u00e9sosph\u00e8re, tandis que les jets g\u00e9ants relient parfois le sommet de l\u2019orage aux r\u00e9gions ionis\u00e9es de la haute atmosph\u00e8re.\n  <\/p>\n<\/section><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>\u00c0 ces altitudes, la pression atmosph\u00e9rique est si faible que l&rsquo;air se comporte comme un gaz rar\u00e9fi\u00e9 : il devient conducteur et s&rsquo;illumine sous l&rsquo;effet d&rsquo;un champ \u00e9lectrique, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d&rsquo;un tube n\u00e9on.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Les elfes : des anneaux lumineux fugaces<\/h2>\n<h3>Qu&rsquo;est-ce qu&rsquo;un elfe ?<\/h3>\n<p>Un <strong>elfe<\/strong> (acronyme anglais <em>ELVES<\/em> : <em>Emissions of Light and Very Low Frequency perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources<\/em>) est un <strong>anneau lumineux rouge\u00e2tre<\/strong> qui se dilate horizontalement dans la basse ionosph\u00e8re, vers 90 km d&rsquo;altitude.<\/p>\n<h3>Caract\u00e9ristiques<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dur\u00e9e :<\/strong> moins d&rsquo;<strong>1 milliseconde<\/strong> \u2014 le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne lumineux le plus bref de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diam\u00e8tre :<\/strong> jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 <strong>300 \u00e0 500 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Couleur :<\/strong> rouge, par excitation de l&rsquo;azote atmosph\u00e9rique<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forme :<\/strong> disque ou anneau s&rsquo;\u00e9largissant \u00e0 vitesse quasi lumineuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>M\u00e9canisme<\/h3>\n<p>Un elfe na\u00eet de l&rsquo;<strong>impulsion \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tique<\/strong> g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par un \u00e9clair particuli\u00e8rement intense \u2014 le plus souvent un \u00e9clair <strong>positif<\/strong> nuage-sol de forte intensit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Cette impulsion se propage vers le haut \u00e0 la vitesse de la lumi\u00e8re. En atteignant la basse ionosph\u00e8re, elle excite les mol\u00e9cules d&rsquo;azote, qui \u00e9mettent bri\u00e8vement dans le rouge. L&rsquo;anneau s&rsquo;\u00e9largit parce que le front d&rsquo;onde touche la couche ionosph\u00e9rique en cercles concentriques croissants.<\/p>\n<p>Sa bri\u00e8vet\u00e9 extr\u00eame le rend <strong>invisible \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u0153il nu<\/strong>. Seules des cam\u00e9ras haute vitesse peuvent le capturer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Les jets bleus : des jaillissements depuis le sommet de l&rsquo;orage<\/h2>\n<h3>Qu&rsquo;est-ce qu&rsquo;un jet bleu ?<\/h3>\n<p>Un <strong>jet bleu<\/strong> est une d\u00e9charge en forme de <strong>c\u00f4ne ou de trompette<\/strong> qui jaillit du sommet du cumulonimbus et s&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e8ve dans la stratosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<h3>Caract\u00e9ristiques<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Point de d\u00e9part :<\/strong> sommet de l&rsquo;orage, vers <strong>15 \u2013 18 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Altitude atteinte :<\/strong> <strong>40 \u00e0 50 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dur\u00e9e :<\/strong> quelques centaines de millisecondes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vitesse d&rsquo;ascension :<\/strong> environ <strong>100 km\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Couleur :<\/strong> bleu vif, par excitation de l&rsquo;azote ionis\u00e9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>M\u00e9canisme<\/h3>\n<p>Contrairement \u00e0 l&rsquo;elfe, le jet bleu est une <strong>v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9charge \u00e9lectrique<\/strong>. Il r\u00e9sulte d&rsquo;un d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre de charges au sommet du nuage : lorsque la charge positive sup\u00e9rieure n&rsquo;est pas neutralis\u00e9e par un \u00e9clair interne, la d\u00e9charge s&rsquo;\u00e9chappe vers le haut.<\/p>\n<p>Sa couleur bleue s&rsquo;explique par la composition de l&rsquo;air \u00e0 ces altitudes et par le type d&rsquo;excitation mol\u00e9culaire, diff\u00e9rent de celui qui produit le rouge des sprites.<\/p>\n<h3>Les jets g\u00e9ants<\/h3>\n<p>Variante spectaculaire, le <strong>jet g\u00e9ant<\/strong> relie directement le sommet de l&rsquo;orage \u00e0 l&rsquo;ionosph\u00e8re, atteignant <strong>80 \u00e0 90 km d&rsquo;altitude<\/strong>. Il \u00e9tablit un pont \u00e9lectrique entre la troposph\u00e8re et l&rsquo;ionosph\u00e8re, transf\u00e9rant une charge consid\u00e9rable.
